Sean Connery, Claire Bloom and Albert Lieven star in this 1961 BBC adaptation of Leo Tolstoy's classic novel. When beautiful young aristocrat Anna Karenina (Bloom) meets the dashing Count Vronsky (Connery) at a Moscow railway station, their first meeting may be overshadowed by tragedy but she is instantly smitten. Trapped in a loveless arranged marriage to the cold Alexei Karenin (Lieven), Anna tries to resist Vronsky's advances but eventually succumbs and becomes his mistress. Her actions cause outrage in St Petersburg society and Karenin reacts by refusing to give her a divorce and preventing her from seeing her young son. Shunned by society, heartbroken and trapped, Anna is driven to desperate measures to find a way out of her situation.
