Viv is overjoyed but he is strangely altered and he is not alone. Ky accompanies him and Ky hates Viv. The feeling is mutual, but Ky's fear of the Rynth adds to their peril and after a deadly attack, Viv finds herself alone again.
The danger escalates when she stumbles into a war zone and, desperate to escape, she is determined to take the next rift out. After a perilous game of cat and mouse with unknown enemies, her search for a rift is rewarded but then she stumbles on a child survivor of a massacre.
To save the little girl, Viv must take a terrible risk but in an alien, war-torn world, who is friend and who is foe?
