Publisher's Synopsis

The main aim of this book is to cover the fundamentals of asymmetric solitary waves. The preliminary part contains the ordered classification of solitary waves and the derivation of evolution equations. As a basis, nonlinear conservative systems are decribed with special attention given to the formation of solitary (mainly symmetric) waves from initial data. The main part of the book describes wave motion with certain energy influx leading to asymmetric solitary waves. Two cases are treated separately - systems perturbed by energy influx and systems with essential energy influx.;The initial impetus for the book was supplied by the Euromech Colloquium Number 241, entitled "Nonlinear Waves in Active Media" organized by the author and Professor David Crighton in September of 1988 in Tallinn.
