"from whatever source it be derived, there is unquestionably a general diffusion of Mosaic tradition everywhere from Petra to Cairo; from the northern platform of the Peninsula to its southern extremity, the name and story of Moses are still predominant. There are two groups of 'Wells of Moses, ' one on each side of the Gulf of Suez; there are the 'Baths of Moses' further down the coast; there is 'the Seat of Moses' near Bisatin, and in the 'Wady Furan;' the 'Mountain of Moses' in the cluster of Sinai; the 'Cleft of Moses' at Petra" (Stanley, "Sinai and Palestine "). He was the great-grandson of Levi, being the second son, and the third and youngest child of Amram, son of Kohath; his mother was also of this tribe (Exod. ii. 1). Thus--Levi "Wady," Arabic for "valley, cleft, rayine." He was three years younger than Aaron (Exod. viii. 7), and many years younger than Miriam (Exod. ii. 4r-7). His Hebrew name was characteristic; Mosheh, "drawn out." Arabic, "Moussa." Greek, Mwuoije, Mow. In the (Latin "Vulgate") "Moyses." In Wickliffe's Bible (a.d. 1380), "Moises." The Princess who found him floating in a cradle in the Nile was called Thermutis; she adopted and "nourished him as her own son" (Acts vii. 21). He was taught "all the learning of the Egyptians" (then the most learned and civilized nation on earth), and "was mighty in words and deeds." There is a vague tradition that he commanded an army employed against Ethiopia; but at all events (however this may have been) he was in person and position one of the greatest men in Egypt.
