Publisher's Synopsis
An anaphylactic reaction, also known as anaphylactic shock, is a severe allergic reaction that can be life-threatening in some cases. Anaphylaxis is a form of this condition. Although it does not happen very often, the severity of the reaction and the speed with which it starts (usually within a few minutes of being exposed to the allergen) make it necessary to seek immediate medical attention.
Anaphylaxis is triggered when the immune system of your body has a severe reaction to an allergen, which results in the release of chemicals that cause swelling and other severe symptoms. These symptoms can lead to swelling of the tissues around the throat and face, which can become severe enough to cause difficulty breathing as well as a sudden drop in blood pressure. These complications can be life-threatening.
