Publisher's Synopsis
After finishing the American Civil War, the president of the Gun-Club, Impey Barbicane, proposed the manufacture of a giant cannon to send a projectile to the Moon. Together with the secretary, JT Maston, and after being informed of the astronomical details by the Cambridge Observatory, they must resolve a series of questions: characteristics of the barrel, shape and size of the projectile, class and quantity of gunpowder, location of the launch site., company financing, etc. The viability of the project is questioned by Captain Nicholl, Barbicane's staunch enemy (if the latter is a projectile builder, the former is a shell and shield builder), who makes a series of bets to Barbicane about the projectile's success.
