The main character, 17-year-old Ember, lives in a world where everything is controlled by the government. The government uses hate games to keep people in line and eliminate those deemed defiant or dangerous to the regime. Ember's life is turned upside down when she is chosen to participate in the Hate Games. She is forced to compete against other teenagers in a series of challenges to test her physical and mental abilities. The contestants are not only fighting for survival, but also for the main prize, which is a luxurious life outside of the government-controlled areas.
During the competition, Ember must navigate the dangerous and breakneck world of hate games. She allies with some of the other candidates but is betrayed by the others.
