Publisher's Synopsis
Inflammation of the membranes (meninges) that surround the brain and spinal cord is known as meningitis. In most cases, the condition is brought on by a bacterial or viral infection. Meningitis can also be caused by a variety of other infectious agents, such as fungi. Meningitis can also be caused by atypical drug reactions and systemic lupus erythematosus, but these are much less common causes. The most common form of meningitis is viral, also known as aseptic meningitis. In most cases, viral meningitis does not directly spread to other people. Meningitis caused by a virus can strike anyone at any time, but most commonly affects children. Meningitis can be caused by a wide variety of viruses, but an enterovirus is most commonly responsible for the condition.
