"When you would have brought people out of Egypt, you will worship me in that mountain. Moses said to God: "I will go before the children of Israel and say the 'Lord of your fathers send me to you'. If they ask me: 'what is his name', what will I tell them?". The Lord said to Moses I am who I am that is how you will tell the children of Israel the one who is sent me to you and so on... Moses encountered God and from that day God began to talk to him and he started talking with God.

The whole story is: God speaking, Moses doing, Moses asking, God speaking. They knew God, they walked with Him, they heard Him, they talked back to Him, he commanded, they obeyed; if they had fears, they told Him and he cleared their fears.
