The attack goes sideways - his mother discovers the plot - and through actions which no one - human, non-human, animal or insect - anticipates, his mother, Nan Bonner, creates a bridge between the human world and the domain of chaos. Humans call this domain "magic". Chance's friends are all back: Kelly O'Hara, Stefan Schultz, his sister Josephine, Sarah Stengler, and Millicent Lee. Even the armadillo manifest as boy, Arthur Dillow from Dallas, is back.
