Joseph Conrad was a prominent British writer who is considered to be one of the greatest authors in English literature. Conrad joined the British merchant marine when he was 20 years old and many of his stories are set at sea. Conrad's writing is also notable for its depiction of human psychology and for his anti-heroic characters. The Children of the Sea, published in 1897, is a novella that centers around a sailor, who is dying of tuberculosis, on board a merchant ship sailing to London.
