Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from The Simple Life
Our author, however, says that to aspire to lead a simple life is, properly speaking, to aspire to fulfill the highest human destiny; and he doubts whether such a life should have disappeared from the scope of present day reality; whether simplicity is to be renounced as an impossible ideal, whether it does depend on particular economic and social conditions or, as he declares, upon the soul and the spirit. Instead of looking towards the ideal of simplicity in life with impotent regret, he asserts that we can make it the object of our resolution, the aim of our practical energy. He affirms that every move ment that humanity has made towards enlighten ment and justice, is in reality a movement towards greater simplicity of life.
