The Transvaal, or South African Republic, its people and government, are at present occupying and perplexing the minds of all thoughtful Britons. The territory is about equal in size to the United Kingdom, and extends on the south from the River Vaal, which separates it from the Orange Free State, to the Limpopo or Crocodile River, which separates the Transvaal on the north from the Chartered territory of The British South Africa Company. On the west it is bounded by Bochu analand, and on the east by the Portuguese territory, which intervenes between the Transvaal and the coast of the Indian Ocean.
