Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from A Collection of Old Chintzes and Toiles De Jouy Gathered in France and Italy by Elinor Merrell, New York
While Toiles de Jouy is a subject that has long interested European scholars and collectors, it has only been in recent years that American students have devoted any attention to it. Among the first to discover the charm of these old fabrics was the late Alexander Drake. Since then the different Museums have added interesting specimens to their collee tions, that of the Institute of Arts and Decorations at Cooper Union being one of the first to acquire several rare documents. To-day not only are there many private collectors, but in the Metropolitan Museum one may see several of the finest Oberkampf fabrics designed by Jean Baptiste Huet in his best period, pieces that equal any exhibited in the galleries of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs.
