Quand la benzine, traitée par l'acide sulfurique anhydre, se change en acide sulfobenzinique il se développe aussi une quantité de chaleur beaucoup moins considérable que quand la mème quantité d'acide sulfurique anhydre passe à l'état de monohydrate. L'acide sulfobenzinique, dans lequel 1 atome d'acide sulfurique seulement se trouve libre de façon à pouvoir saturer I atome de base tandis que le second atome constitue un corps parfaitement neutre avec la benzine, n'est pas décomposé quand on le fait bouillir avec un excès de base.
