In der Folge nahm der Einfluß der Braganzas immer mehr zu, besonders seit Fernando II. Isabel, eine Nichte Affonsos V., die Schwester der späteren Gattin des Thronfolgers, geheiratet hatte. Seit dieser Zeit nannte er sich Herzog von Guimar'äes6 und Braganza. Ferdinands Großvater hatte 1449 von Affonso V. Zum Lohn für die Beiseiteschaffung des Oheims des Königs als erstes feudales Besitztum den Flecken Braganza zu Eigen erhalten, er selbst herrschte dreißig Jahre später uber fünfzig Städte und feste Plätze in Portugal und konnte dreitausend Reiter und zehntausend Mann Fußtruppen ins Feld stellen.
