Dicono i trattati, che partendo dal Sole e Spingendosi nello Spazio, primo si incontra il pianeta Mercurio. Questo è poi assolutamente vero? Non paia strano al lettore il dubbio. Nelle scienze d'osservazione in generale il dubi tare e virtù; e luce che rischiara, e permette di maggior mente addentrarsi nel vero: solo quando e sistematico, il dubbio è dannoso, e pari alle tenebre tutto involgeecon fonde, nascondendo alla mente la verità e l'errore insieme. D' altra parte non è poi vero, che quanto si riferisce al sistema solare sia perfettamente noto. Solo alcuni libri soverchiamente popolari l'atfermano, mentre molte cose rimangono ancora a Spiegare in esso. Nel sistema del Sole, cosi come nelle profondità dei cieli e dei mari, come alla superficie e nelle viscere della Terra, non e esaurito il campo delle conquiste scientifiche; la trepidazione di Ales sandro non ha ragione d' essere nel regno dell' osserva zione e del pensiero.
