Joel chandler harris was born Decem ber 9, 1848, in the quiet little village of Eaton ton, Putnam County, Georgia. His father died in his infancy. His mother was young and very poor. She did the best she could for her little boy, rearing him carefully, and sending him to the Eatonton day school. That was before the public school era, and schools were pay institutions.
