In?orescence a capitule surrounded by an involucre of bracts; ?owers small, all tubular, or the outer ones (?orets of the ray) ligulate, the inner ones (?orets of the disk) tubular; all bisexual, or some female, some male or neuter, and some bisexual; calyx-limb 0 or a feathery pappus; stamens 5, anthers always connate (syngene sions) ovary inferior, I-celled, 1-ovuled, stigmas 2; fruit a 1-seeded achene, often surmounted by the feathery pappus. A vast order, the largest among ?owering plants, comprising about one-tenth of the ?owering ?ora of the globe, belonging to all climates and all altitudes. Many of the genera are distinguished only by minute characters, and in some of the genera the species are very difficult, running into one another by insensible gradations.
