Hieruber herrscht bei Kant, seinen Commentatoren und den Historikern eine grosse Unklarheit, welche weder durch Fischers (Gesch. III, 39) noch B. Erdmanns sonst lichtvolle Erorterungen (Einl. zu Kants Proleg. LXXIX--XCIX) genugend aufgehellt worden ist. An der vorliegenden Stelle scheint die Sache einfach. Nach ihr fragt Hume: Kann die Vernunft a priori den synthetischen Satz der Causalitat (jede Veranderung erfolgt nach dem Gesetze der Verknupfung von Ursache und Wirkung) aufstellen? Die Vernunft kann nur analytische Satze aufstellen und auch diese sind nur relativ apriorisch. Die Vernunft kann also jenen Satz nicht aufstellen; sie hat kein Recht, denselben zu behaupten, somit ist der Satz nicht nothwendig, er hat nur den Schein der Nothwendigkeit durch die Gewohnheit erhalten. Hume habe somit erkannt, dass jener Satz den Anspruch erhebe, synthetisch und a priori zu sein. Er habe gefragt: ist ein solcher Satz moglich? Er habe gezeigt, dass er aus Begriffen analytisch nicht moglich sei, weil er eben synthetisch ist; er habe behauptet, dass er als apriorischer unmoglich sei. Die Sache ist somit scheinbar klar und einfach. Allein sie wird vollstandig unklar und verworren, wenn wir jene Stellen der Proleg. herbeiziehen. Ist dort das Hume'sche Problem" dasselbe wie hier?
