Individuen Werken und Handlungen entspricht, die er, in seinem Wohlwollen, als das eigentlich Deutsche zu verehren gelernt hat. Wo sich der Deutsche nicht in's Grosse erheben kann, macht er einen weniger als mittelm�ssigen Eindruck. Selbst die ber�hmte deutsche Wissenschaft, in der eine An zahl der nutzlichsten h�uslichen und familienhaften Tugenden, Treue Selbstbeschr�nkung Fleiss Bescheidenheit Reinlichkeit, in eine freiere Luft versetzt und gleichsam verkl�rt erscheint, ist doch keineswegs das Resultat dieser Tugenden; aus der N�he betrachtet sieht das zu unbeschr�nktem Erkennen an treibende Motiv in Deutschland einem Mangel, einem Defecte, einer L�cke viel �hnlicher als einem Ueberfiu33 von Kr�ften, fa5t wie die Folge eines d�rftigen formlosen unlebendigen Lebens und selbst wie eine Flucht vor der moralischen Kleinlichkeit und Bosheit, denen der Deutsche, ohne solche Ableitungen, unterworfen ist, und die auch, trotz der Wissen schaft, ja noch in der Wissenschaft des �fteren hervorbrechen. Auf die Beschr�nktheit, im Leben Erkennen und Beurtheilen, verstehen sich die Deutschen als wahre Virtuosen des Philister haften; will sie Einer �ber sie hinaus in's Erhabene tragen, so machen Sie sich schwer wie Blei, und als solche Bleigewichte h�ngen sie an ihren wahrhaft Grossen, um diese aus dem Aether zu sich und zu ihrer d�rftigen Bed�rftigkeit herab zuziehen. Vielleicht mag diese philister-gem�thlichkeit nur Entartung einer echten deutschen Tugend sein einer innigen Versenkung in das Einzelne Kleine N�chste und in die Mysterien des Individuums aber diese verschimmelte Tugend ist jetzt schlimmer als das offenbarste Laster, be sonders seitdem man sich nun gar dieser Eigenschaft, bis zur litterarischen Selbsrglorification, von Herzen froh be wusst geworden ist. Jet2t sch�tteln sich die Gebzldeten, unter den bekanntlich so cultivirten Deutschen, und die s'lirter, unter den bekanntlich so uncultivirten Deutschen, .�ffentlich die H�nde und treffen eine Abrede mit einander, wie man f�rderhin schreiben dichten malen musiciren und selbst philosophiren, ja regieren m�sse, um weder der Bildung des einen zu ferne zu stehen, noch der "gem�thlichkeit des anderen zu nahe zu treten. Dies nennt man jetzt "die deutsche Cultur der Jetztzeit, wobei nur noch zu erfragen w�re, an welchem Merkmale jener Gebildete zu erkennen ist, nach dem wir wissen, dass sein Milchbruder, der deutsche Philister, sich jet2t selbst, ohne Versch�mtheit, gleichsam nach verlorner Unschuld, aller Welt als solchen zu erkennen giebt.
