United States exports of unmanufactured tobacco in the recent fiscal year (july 1998-june 1999) totaled 951 million pounds (export weight) valued at. 226 million dollars. Both quantity and value were 10 percent above 1997-98. Flue-cured tobacco accounted for three-fourths of the total. Each leaf group except Virginia firse-cured increased over the preceding year. Cigar tobacco exports increased sharply. Eca pro grams were'a major factor affecting tobacco exocrts to the United Kingdom and other western eiropean countries. From April 3, 1998, through June 30, 1999, eca procurement authorizations for United States tobacco amounted to 137 million dollars.
