La gloire de Pascal est liee aux destinees de l'eglise, a la vie de Port - Royal et aux querelles du jansenisme. C'est en vain qu'on voudrait l'en separer. Quoi qu'on ait dit, ces que relles n'etaient ni ridicules, ni petites. Elles furent comme les assises ou vinrent comparaitre l'esprit ancien et l'esprit nouveau l'un defendu par la ruse et l'intrigue et par le cre dit, l'autre 'par la science et par le genie, assises tenues en face de i'europe, et ou se debattaient les interets du christia nisme, de la civilisation moderne, et, par consequent, du genre humain. Si donc on ne plonge les regards dans ces querelles, si on n'en decouvre la raison premiere dans l'etat du christianisme et dans le travail interieur qu'il eprouvait, a l'epoque memorable d'une lutte imminente entre deux so cietes fameuses, qui divisaient l'eglise de France, peut-etre est-il difficile de comprendre le role de Pascal, la nature de ses ecrits, et les titres reels de sa grandeur. Je l'avoue, une entreprise qui exige qu'on se place au centre du mouvement chretien pour le juger, presente quelque chose d'austere et de perilleux; mais, en parlant de Pascal, la crainte de pa raitre un ami trop serieux de la verite serait pusillanime.
