Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from Sacramental Confession and Priestly Absolution: A Lecture Delivered Before the Exeter Branch of the Church Association, on the 23rd of January, 1878, Saville in the Chair; Revised, With Notes and Appendices
Although it will be necessary for me to Speak at greater length of the Confessional, than of the priestly claim to bestow forgiveness in the tribunal of the Confessional, the latter question is far the more important. If the priest did not claim the power of forgiving the sins which have been confessed to him, if he did not teach that through auricular confession only men can be absolved from their sins against God, * the practice might not only be permissible, but in some exceptional cases might be productive of good.
