The National Institutes of Health, a component of the Depart ment of Health, Education, and Welfare, is the principal agency of the Federal government responsible for biomedical research, communication of biomedical knowledge, and education for the health professions. To permit full dissemination of information on its responsibilities and accomplishments this Annual Report for Fiscal Year 1971 is published. Appropriate tables showing appropriations, grants and other extramural awards, and personnel levels have been included. It is hoped this publication will serve as a ready reference volume for those concerned with nih activities.
