Nobody, I hope, will expect me to be an impartial critic of anything written by the author of this little volume, but, having been its first reader, I may be able to tell other readers something about the general character of its contents. Stories for children may be divided into three distinct classes. There is the story which amuses by the association of incoa gruous ideas, and is written simply to amuse; there is the story with a decided moral, written with the moral constantly in view; and, lastly, there is the story in which an audience of' children would hardly suspect the existence of any definite moral, and yet an intelligent grown up person who happened to be listening, would at once detect an undercurrent of criticism or satire which he would follow with interest, and.
