Publisher's Synopsis
Aurukun mission was established in 1904 by Moravian missionaries, the third of a succession of missions on the western coast of Cape York - Mapoon in 1891 and then Weipa in 1898. Aurukun became a self-governing local government area in 1978.
Neil McGarvie served at Aurukun from 1964 to 1970 as a technical missionary. The images in this publication are selected from more than 700 slides taken by Neil McGarvie during his time at Aurukun. They are essentially his family album, but a number of images are of relevance to the contemporary Aurukun community, as well as being of historical significance.
