Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from The Dorcas Club: Or Our Girls Afloat

Tee dorcas club is the fifth volume of the yacht club series and like its fellows in the same box, is an independent story, having its own hero, and, in this instance, several heroines, with no necessary connection with any other volume of the series, though some of the characters whose acquaintance the reader has already made are again introduced. The Dorcas Society, as the name would indicate, was an association of young ladies, banded together for benevolent purposes, which did a great deal of good in a humble and quiet way. The members of this Soci ety formed the Dorcas Club, to engage in the healthy and agree able exercise of rowing. Not many years ago the skilful use of an oar would have been considered an unfeminine accomplishment; but happily the fashions change in matters of custom as well as garments, and now even prim maidens of uncertain age are not startled when they see young ladies at the oar. It is a pleasant and health-giving exercise for girls, and the author hopes to en courage its use.
