Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from A Review of 1955 Survey Data on Household Meat Consumption

Meat, the most popular main dish of American meals, accounted for one quarter of the household food outlays in spring 1955. 2/ It held a big edge over its nearest competitor, dairy products, which too-ie 17 percent. Cereals and bakery products, vegetables, poultry and eggs and fruits followed in importance. These data were reported by the households surveyed for the usda in a nation-wide food consumption survey in the spring of 1955, the results of which were recently published. 3] Data from this survey also reveal that meat accounted for about two thirds of the amount spent for main dish items-meat, poultry, eggs, cheese, and seafood.
