Excerpt from The Justice and Necessity of Restraining the Clergy in Their Preaching: Wherein Is Shown, That the Licentiousness of the Pulpit, and the Pride and Ignorance of the Inferior High-Flying Clergy, Have Occasion'd the Late Disorders in the State, and the Contempt of That Venerable Body

Having diftinguilh'd the good from the bad, and rang'd the latter with the Goats; I {hall make no Scruple to (peak my Mind of them freely, as others 'have done before me, and chul'e this time to do it, when the State has thought fit to publifh Injun�iiom, ' for the better regulating the Forms of Worlhip and Preaching, and direfting the Clergy in dif chai'ge of their Duty.' This it is authoriz'd to do by that high Prerogative of the Supre macy, which is {worn robe in the Crown by all-who ofiiciate at the Altar. Yet whom thefe wife and necefihry Injunfiiom af fect, clamour at them as a Novelty, int1'odu c'd by the ill-miller: to the Church 5 though there has hardly been a Reign fince 'the' Rec formation, inwhich fuch Royal Order: relating to the Clergy have not been publiih'd.
