Born at Chambery in 1 764, Xavier de Maistre, after having received a sound classical education, first turned to painting, but soon took service in the Sardinian army. The French Revolution brought about the annexation of the Duchy of Savoy to France Unwflling to serve France he followed his brother, J oseph-marie de Maistre, to Russia on his appointment as ambassador of the King of Sardinia to the Court of St. Peters burg (1 Entering the Russian service he took part in the Caucasian and Persian wars, in which he distinguished himself, and returned, after these campaigns, to St. Petersburg, with the rank of Major - General. There he married (181 7) and definite settled. Some few years before his death he paid a visit to Paris and Naples, and died in St. Petersburg in 1852, at the advanced age of ei ghty eight.
