Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from Chile in 1859

Very good progress is making in the higher branches of instruo tion. At the preparatory school of the National Institute of San tiago, an establishment where studies are given the widest range as with us, there are about 700 pupils, two-thirds of whom are day scholars Besides these, there are fourteen Lyceums or High schools provided by the state, and fifty private boarding schools for both sexes. There males, including 260 seminarists, and girls, receive the education wealthy families can afford, a proportion much exceeding that of most European countries, when we take their relative populations into account.
