Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from Poultry and Egg Situation, Vol. 270: February 1972
Look for a small expansion in broiler and turkey output and a tapering off in egg production this year. Stronger poultry and egg prices are likely during 197 2. Prices will be bolstered by increased consumer incomes, higher red meat prices, and substantially lower pork supplies. Egg output may decline to near year-earlier levels during the first half of 1972 and average slightly lower in the second half. The laying flock likely will be down moderately throughout 1972, but output per layer will increase. The laying flock as of January 1 this year was down 2 percent. In addition, the july-december 1971 hatch of egg-type pullet chicks for flock replacement during the first half of 1972 was down 7 percent. However, use of Marek's vaccine has substantially reduced the mortality both of replacement pullets and layers, providing a larger, healthier, and more productive laying flock. On January 1 the rate of lay was up a little more than percent. The increase during 1972 probably will be less because the current rate already reflects the effects of the vaccine, and laying flocks will average older than last year.
