A questo stesso momento della vita del Repetti si ri ferisce pur anco il frequente e dotto carteggio ch'egli teneva con Carlo Troya, cominciato nel 1823, e durato vivissimo fino quasi a questi ultimi tempi. Sarebbe stato da tacere di questo carteggio, come di cosa af fatto privata, se dopo minuto esame di quelle carte non si fosse conosciuto che i due dotti amici, oltre al comunicarsi il frutto dei propri studi, si proponevano 1' un 1' altro i piu ardui quesiti della Storia italiana, e con lunghe e pazienti ricerche s'aiutavano a risolverli, mettendo a comune i documenti raccolti e studian done insieme la vera interpretazione. Ciascuna di quelle lettere e, per vero dire, una dissertazione sto rica; e tutte insieme, oltre all' essere onorevolissime per il Repetti, il quale da un uomo come e Carlo Troya vi e spesso chiamato onore e ornamento d'ita lia, sono una raccolta di pregiati lavori storici, degni non solo di essere conservati, ma forse ancora, quando che sia, pubblicati. Ed infatti in queste lettere sono illustrati e difesi moltissimi documenti dell' epoca longobarda; sono dichiarate le genealogie di molte famiglie d' antichi dinasti; si discute sull' origine del dominio temporale dei Papi e sulla natura dell' Im pero germanico, che sono veramente le due grandi arterie della storia italiana anzi della storia del medio evo di tutta Europa; e con grandissima cura.
