Mas dejando esta digresión espinosa, vuelvo a preguntar: ¿por qué se estudia latin? Contestando a esta pregunta, decía el conocido filólogo fran ces Sr. Bréal, que por sorprendente que pueda parecérnoslo, no ha mucho que se la formuló por vez primera. Cosas que se hacen tan naturalmen te, tienen de ordinario razón de ser profunda; na die se pregunta por qué hay gobierno, justicia, leyes. Durante largo tiempo el latin fué sinónimo de instrucción; sin aquél no podia darse ésta, constituída casi por entero de literatura latina, sagrada o profana. No es de extrañar, pues, que no ocurriera a las mentes desde luego el punto de utilidad; negar la necesidad del latín hubiera sido negar la de la enseñanza.
