Excerpt from Reminiscences of the Founding of a Christian Mission on the Gambia
Before eight o'clock he received a message from the kind old Chief to breakfast with him, and anice looking bowl of boiled white rice, with a boiled fowl upon it, was placed on the ground to be eaten; but neither knife, fork, nor spoon appeared, nor had be anything of the kind with him. But the Chief soon showed the white man the most simple and expeditious way of using the food, by thrusting his hand into the rice, and raising it fully charged to his mouth, inviting his guest to follow his example by say'mg, Come, tobaub, white ea A sharp appetite helped the Englishman to overcome his European objec tions in this particular; but a greater dificulty remained.
