Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from Progress Report on the Mach Reflection Calculation

If X, Y are cartesian coordinates in the plane of Figure 1, with the origin at the tip of the wedge, and t is time measured from the instant at which the primary shock touches this tip, the flow pattern is stationary in similarity variables X/t, Y/t, (until the reflected shock strikes the upper wall of the shock tube). It is therefore assumed that the initial - value problem of this flow, when expressed in these variables, has the property that with almost any initial data the solution approaches the desired one as t w. Physical considerations suggest that if the initial flow pattern is not too far from the correct one this approach will be fairly rapid.
