It was but natural, as the book became less of an apologia and more a handbook of theology, that the sections dealing with doctrine should be most largely increased. The things that impress a modern reader in comparing the successive editions are, first, Calvin's growing belief in a more representative form of government in church and state; and, second, the un?inching way in which he deduces startling but entirely logical conclusions from his premises.
