Under the present title are included selections from two former volumes, Accolan of Gaul, and Lyrics and la'yls. Such poems only as appeared to the author's judgment worthiest of retention have been retained. In the selection of these he has endeavored to exercise a critical discrimination and, to the best of his ability, to correct or expunge the frequent obscurity, super?uity, and exaggerated expression of the earlier works. Many of the poems have been partially, several entirely, rewritten.
