Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from Selected Dramas of John Dryden: With the Rehearsal
The present edition was undertaken in 1901 its completion has been delayed by various causes. A postponement of the time of printing, after I had completed the manuscript of the Introduction, gave me time to become acquainted with an excellent dissertation by Dr. Torben Lundbeck, Dryden som Tragediedigter (copen hagen, which covers in a more extended form a portion of the ground of my own essay, and anticipates many of my own con elusions. Had I known Lundbeek's work earlier, I should prob ably have altered several of my own paragraphs, and should have expanded my treatment of certain topics. But since Lundbeck has not led me to modify any of the judgments that I had already formed without his aid, I have let the body of the Introduction stand practically unaltered, adding to it only a single phrase (page 1, lines 13, I have, however, quoted several passages from his work in my footnotes.
