Colbert etait aussi grand partisan dela politique coloniale; il fondait la compagnie des Indes orientales, et lui donnait le monopole du commerce entre le cap de bonne-esperance a l'ouest et le cap Horn a l'est. La compagnie devait etablir le centre de ses operations a Madagascar, dont le nom avait ete transforme en celui d'ile Dauphine, comme s'il suffisait de changer un nom pour annexer un pays, en modifier le climat, et transformer les populations qui l'habitent! La souscription aux entreprises du roi etait obligatoire pour tous ceux aqui il faisait la faveur de demander leur concours. L'etat payait a la compagnie 50 livres par tonneau a l'exportation et le double a l'importation. L echec n'en fut pas moins complet.
