Not illustrated. 1905 edition. Excerpt: ... (WILLIAM), stationer in Oxford, is mentioned in November, 1507, when three members of the University became surety in 20 for his good behaviour. Univ. Arch., Reg. F., fol. 36. He is mentioned also in 1507-8 as binding books for the library of Magdalen College. By 1524 he was appointed a University stationer, but resigned his post on October 11th, 1532. He died in 1537 and his will was proved on June 1 1th of that year. Gibson, Early Oxford Bindings, p. 46. HOWE (WILLIAM), printer in London, was admitted a freeman November 29th, 1556. He had entered copies of ballads as early as 1565. In 1566 he took over the printing office of Abraham Veale for whom he continued to print for many years. He married in 1569 Alice Farrare. London Marriage Licenses, p. 43. In 1573-4 he came upon the Livery and in 1582 was Renter to the Stationers' Company. He continued to print up to about 1590 but only owned one press. His son was apprenticed in 1597 and the last mention of him in the Registers is in 1603. He lived in Fleet Street and used a device which had belonged to R. Hall, a boy with wings and a weight. HUBY (EDWARD), stationer in York, is twice mentioned in the Fabric Rolls of the Minster between the years 1525 and 1528 pp. 101, 103. HUGUELIN (jean), see Kerbriant (J.). 7 8 HUKE--HUVIN. HUKE or HUCKE (GILES), stationer in London, was an original member of the Stationers' Company in 1557. He is mentioned in the Registers as taking an apprentice in 1565 but he appears to have fallen into poverty and became porter to the Company. The last entry relating to him occurs in 1580-81.
