Publisher's Synopsis
'154 Poems' is the first opus collection of poems and short narrative verse by Peter Hobden.
Peter Hobden has an international academic background in human brain science at world-class universities and is now a published author of English poems and literature which harmonise up-to-date understanding of human brain function with modern neuro linguistics and the classical format. The 154 poems title matches the number of sonnets by William Shakespeare and is intended as a collection for individual open-minded reflection by the reader upon each piece. The poems use dense rhetoric, metaphor and emotive language in couplet format, as well as regular and irregular meter to evoke strong emotive and visual imagery in the reader. There are no overly-complex words and the author writes in a very free and accessible style to allow the reader to embrace the thoughts and concepts in a way that feels natural to them. The intention is not to be autobiographical as such (although the poems are all inspired by real events and people) but to evoke strong emotional connections and feelings in the reader on a wide range of subjects related to their own human emotions, feelings, lived experiences, conscious thought and subconscious processing. Subjects matter explore: Romanticism, romantic love, human senses, nature, war, loss, life and death, marriage, spirituality, ageing, femininity, childhood, innocence and romantic idealism. The author has great interest in the use of poetry and other forms of literature for the purposes of psychological well-being and contentment, as well as the practice of synergising language with music, art and other creative artforms, to promote positive and healthy psychology and health. He believes that language, in synergy with other creative formats, has wide and under-utilised power and application in the rehabilitation and maintenance of good psychological and psychiatric health and well-being.
