In this work, a method for determining the productivity time of place name types is developed using quantitative statistical methods. On the basis of 924 Lower Saxon place names from five administrative districts and three urban districts, the non-linguistic characteristics of initial transmission, deserted land and soil fertility as well as linguistic characteristics in the area of morphology and semantics / lexis are evaluated and assessed with regard to their significance for the productivity time of place name types method, statements on the relative productivity time of place name types for a specific study area can be checked and secured on a broad statistical basis. In addition to place name base words and suffixes that frequently occur in Lower Saxony, the work also looks at different types of determiners and bases and methodological conclusions for future research designs are derived.
