Zoya grew up during the wars that ravaged Afghanistan and escaped to Pakistan as a teenager, devastated after the disappearance and death of her parents. There, she joined the Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan (RAWA), which challenged the edicts of the Taliban government and she has since made frequent dangerous journeys back to her homeland.
The spotlight the 11 September attacks focused on Afghanistan highlighted the conditions in which Afghan women lived under the Taliban. For Zoya their defeat was welcome, but their successors were not. RAWA's fight to bring the plight of Afghan women to the world's attention continues.
