Publisher's Synopsis

"...Though Chou can adapt himself to nearly any requirement of the external situation, he does not lack underlying principles..." --From Chou En-Lai: An Assessment, 1972

" in 1958, Teng ...earned the accolade, "Mao Tse-tung's close comrade in arms," an honor reserved for only five others in the party's history" --From Teng Hsiao-p'ing: A Profile, 1974

Zhou Enlai and Deng Xiaoping: CIA Profiles of Two Chinese Leaders is a combination of two profiles of Chinese leaders prepared by the CIA: Chou En-Lai: An Assessment (1972) declassified in 2008, and Teng Hsiao-p'ing: A Profile (1974), declassified in 2009. Due to the classified nature of these reports, several pages are still not released.

Zhou Enlai or Chou En Lai (1894-1971), a Chinese Communist leader, was China's head of government, serving from 1949 until his death in 1976. Zhou served under Chairman Mao Zedong and was instrumental in the Communist Party's rise to power, in forming foreign policy, and developing the Chinese economy.

Deng Xiaoping or Teng Hsiao-p'ing (1904-1997), was the leader of the People's Republic of China from 1978 until his retirement in 1992. After Chairman Mao Zedong's death in 1976, Deng led China through free market-economy reforms and has been called the "Architect of Modern China."

These profiles are among many prepared by the CIA of foreign leaders, such as Adolf Hitler and Soviet leader Nikita Krushchev (also available from Cosimo Reports.)
