Publisher's Synopsis

An American couple visit South Africa in the course of a circumnavigation on a sailboat greatly in need of repairs. They were told that, being white, they should have no problems in Apartheid S. Africa. However, they find much to trouble them. Through the author's Quaker contacts they begin to see signs of the great struggle occurring in S. Africa and the harsh realities of life for non-whites. Many individuals and groups, including some churches, were working to end Apartheid in a peaceful manner. Young children often were at the forefront of the struggle. Through contact with relatives from her Dutch background they became aware also of the white Afrikaner point of view. During their year and a half in SA they talked with, and listened to, any and all. The author attempted to get all of this down in the journal as well as their personal reactions to some of the heart-breaking stories.
