What I call 'the ugly' are things we dislike or even despise about ourselves. In the stuffing down of these censured parts of us, we become conditional beings: some of who we are is acceptable and some is not. Thus we set ourselves up to live conditionally: one foot on the throat of 'the ugly' the other balancing our acceptable self, and all for the approval of others. And so, we are approved of from the outside in, and not, from the inside out. Whole-hearted love cannot show up in our conditional lives because we are not whole-heartedly available to ourselves or anyone. We are, therefore, conditional lovers attracting conditional love.
