Publisher's Synopsis

Yoakum tells the story of a Jesus Movement era preacher named Kris Shepperd. While hitchhiking with guitar in hand from southern California in route to a Bible college in Dallas, he is unexpectedly called by God to begin a ministry in the small desert town of Yoakum, Texas. Among the many characters of the community Kristopher encounters is a hellfire and damnation preacher and a hippie hating town Sheriff. As Kris's ministry develops and grows, he evangelizes while performing at the town saloon each night and holds church services in the bar on Sundays. Many Yoakum townsfolk come to Christ as a result of his ministry. However, the local pastor and town Sheriff do not like the hippie preacher's invasion of their community and devise a sinister plot to destroy his ministry by framing him for a serious crime. Throughout the story is an intriguing look at the creativity of Jesus Movement era methods of getting out the gospel in the face of opposition and injustice. Its gut wrenching conclusion will leave readers with an appalling look at just how far evil authority will go to get rid of anything that threatens its power. In the end however, God has the final say about things, and it isn't pretty.
