Thirteen-year-old Lucy and her younger brother Cooper are yanked from the humdrum of a school day by their ordinarily fearsome mother, LuAnn, who is now on the verge of a breakdown.
It's a family emergency, she says.
Once her two kids are loaded in the pickup, with its bed piled high with bags, she drives them not to the hospital, not to their home, but over a hundred miles outside of the city to a little house in the middle of nowhere. A tiny shack without electricity, without indoor plumbing, and without help if anything were to go wrong.
It's a zombie apocalypse, she explains.
But as the days go by, Lucy and Cooper begin to doubt their mother's claims, question her sanity, and on top of everything else, they encounter strange things and happenings in the isolated prairie they refuse to call home. A friendly dog without an owner, sunflowers that grow overnight and seem to whisper secrets, and a vanishing young man with a warning for them.
